TIME STAMPED
I have had many requests to see how I do my honey harvests. Here it is!
The date on one of the cameras is not correct. So ignore the date stamps.
I harvest before Goldenrod comes out.
I do NOT use smoke on hives.
In Virginia, rule of thumb for frames to be pulled is 70% or more capped.
I uncap and spin the honey in a CLEAN greenhouse.
I finish off the honey in the kitchen.
I use a large hole filter to allow more pollen to pass through to the honey. Having pollen in the honey is somewhat like getting allergy shots. Small doses may trigger the body's natural immune system to create antibodies to the air born pollen which may cause common season allergy responses.
'LOCAL HONEY' does NOT mean within 10 miles of your home. It mean an area that has the same type of foliage/ flowers blooming. Local for me is from lower Maryland down to around N Carolina.
I keep all the wax which I will clean and use on different things later
I allow the honey to rest a few days before bottling to allow air bubbles from spinning it to rise to the top. The honey bucket then allows me to pull off honey from the bottom while the bubbles and wax which past through filter float to the top.
Please check out my related videos on storing the frames and damages wax moths can do if you don't do it correctly.
