Another, dimension, as it were. The third dimension, actually. Let’s talk about volume. Where surface area looks at the extent of an object in two-dimensions, volume adds a third. It’s the amount of three-dimensional space an object takes up. After all, Minecraft is a 3D game, so why don’t we just take a look at it’s area. It’s not so hard to figure out. Knowing two components, the length and the width, we only need the height. Currently, as of making this video, the Minecraft world has a maximum height of 256 blocks, translating to 256 meters. When we proceed with the math, that gives minecraft a volume of over 900 million cubic kilometers [921,600,000]. The earth’s volume is over 1 trillion cubic kilometers, [1,083,210,000,000]. In terms of volume, the earth actually has Minecraft beat by over 1000 times. That’s odd, isn’t it? How can one world be bigger than another in area, but smaller in volume? The answer lies in the shape itself. Let’s look at the earth real quick. Our planet is practically a sphere, with only a third of a percent deviating from that sphere-shape otherwise. This means that for every meter the shape extends, it will equally extend one meter in all other directions. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a rectangular prism. Well, even then it’s really almost a flat square. For every Meter of length and width added onto Minecraft, only 4 micrometers of height are added on. Meaning, it’s base to height ratio is 1:0.000000000000071. This explains how a world like Minecraft can have a monstrous surface area, but relatively tiny volume. Think of the earth as a golf ball, and minecraft as a napkin 7 times the earth's length. While the napkin itself may reach farther than the ball in terms of length and width, due to the ball’s base to height ratio it has a much bigger volume. In the same light, Minecraft is squandered by the earth in volume, but its area trumps it by over 7 times.
