Oh hello, in this video I’m going to show you how I made this 3D Paper Street Map of New York City.
***Please open the Description for a full breakdown of the project***
Ah, I see you’re interested in learning more. I like that about you. Since you’re a curious detective at heart, here are some answers to the questions you might have:
- “Hey Kyle, why did you do this?"
Ah, good question. Ultimately this was a test of my cutting abilities and fine motor skills. I wanted to see if I could create a professional looking result that rivalled that of a cutting machine. Following the completion of the project, I can definitely see the benefits and efficacy of machinery.
However, in terms of art, I feel there is no soul if everything is automated. Every single cut you see on this NYC street map -every curve, join and mistake- was made by my hand. A part of my soul resided within this work, and that, at least for me, is what makes art, art.
- “Why a Street Map of New York though?”
I chose to make a street map of NYC because I love the visual complexity a road network creates. For me, there is no place that this is more beautifully captured than in New York City. The Big Apple’s structured road layout is art itself, and I thought it appropriate to make it the subject of this work.
- "Oh cool, how long did it take you to make?"
It took approximately 160 hours of work over the course of 3 weeks to complete this piece (mainly because over 1717 pieces were cut out of paper by hand).
- "Are you allowed to use Google Maps to make this?"
Well, I mean, I hope so. I looked up their fair usage rules here:

This is a one-off, non-commercial piece that I made for fun. With any luck, Google will be kind to me.
- "Do you have any social media things I can stalk you on?"
Ah... yeah, s-sure?
