The same counts for the taxiways. Whenever we as pilots go to airports we always check the taxiways beforehand to ensure minimum surprises when we land. In this way we know already what we can expect. In many airlines, the tiller is on the captains side only. That means that the captain taxies, the first officer guides him or her. Whenever we landed and slowed down to taxi speed, the Tower or Ground tells us to vacate via specific taxiways and also names the stand number. What I do, is, I punch in the taxi instructions in the fms while ATC gives me the clearance. In that way I do not forget what the tower told me. After I did that, I check the chart, either paper or electronic, and show my colleague which way to go by pointing out the route on the chart and guiding him while taxing.
