How to get public domain ebooks on Google Play Book app

Transcript: Hello everyone! My name is Cesar Martinez, and I'm a (future) reference librarian. I'm going to show you how to download free and public domain ebooks and place them in your Google account for reading on Google's Play Books app. Doing this will allow you to read books on your Chrome web browser, Android phones and tablets, or Ipads and Iphones while syncing across platforms. You'll never lose your page position or bookmarks when switching devices. First, make sure you're logged in to your Google account. I'll be adding a book to my TWU email account which happens to be powered by Google. Now, we'll type in the address for the ACC Library's home page. Go to library.austincc.edu. Click on Online-Ebooks. Scroll down to the section where it says "available to the general public." You have several options here, but for this tutorial we're going to get an ebook in epub format from Project Gutenberg. Google Play Books only supports the epub and pdf formats as of now. Let's click on the Project Gutenberg link. You have options here for finding books. I'm going to go ahead and scroll down to the bottom and click on "Top 100 Books and Authors." Let's say I feel like reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Let's click on it. This book has a few different formats available, but we're going to use the epub format. I don't know if this book has any images in it, but I'm going to choose that epub version anyway. Click on the Google Drive icon. Now what this does, is that it saves the ebook directly to your Google drive, without having to download anything. I'm already signed in to my TWU gmail account, so that's the Google Drive it will be saved in. Google will ask you if you give Project Gutenberg permission to access your Google Drive. Click "Accept." You'll get this confirmation. Click "Ok." Now let's navigate to play.google.com/books and click on "uploads." Here Google provides a list of benefits of using their Play Books app. Let's click on "upload files." If you had an epub or pdf file on your computer, you could drag it into this area, or you can click on "select files from your computer" to start the upload. We saved the epub from the Gutenberg site to our Google drive, so let's click on "My Drive." Find your epub file and click "select." Now that the file has been added to Play Books, you'll be able to read it using the Chrome web browser, or the Android and iOS app that are available for free from Google. Thanks for watching.
