How To Rap: Edit Your First Draft Editing your work: Here’s a topic I’ve been wanting to talk about for a while and something I’m personally pretty guilty of. When you’re writing verses, you don’t always have to use your first draft. See I tend to get stuck in the mindset where I feel like the first thing I produce is gold. It has something to do with simply accomplishing the task, instead of really giving it the full effort it deserves. Then later, I’ll come back and look at what I’ve created and pick out all kinds of flaws. And it’s not just me, but the audience who is able to pick up on these flaws as well. Then, I’ve spent time creating something that really wasn’t high enough quality to be released in the first place and have to redo the work. The problem is, it’s a little difficult to release revised versions of art, so it really comes down to doing it right the first time. I’ve now tried to implement a forced feedback system where I at least take a second look at anything I’ve written at a later date. Many times, I use that original draft. Other times, I make minor edits. And other times, I make a huge, major edits. This really helps keep my quality in check. You can also do this to a minor degree by showing it to someone else for feedback. Make sure to take this with a grain of salt, since they may be inferring their personal preferences into the art. That being said, many times other listeners can help you pick up on any potential problems. Now I’m not saying that you alway have to edit and that your first work can’t be correct, it’s just that giving things a second look over can sometimes help you avoid some serious pitfalls.
