Road bikes aren't designed to be taken off road, but sometimes you have no choice. What do you do in this situation? Follow our guide to riding your road bike off road to find out! Follow GCN on YouTube: http://gcn.eu/gcnsubs The two main issues with riding a road bike off road are traction and potential damage to your bike. Pick your line carefully to ensure you are riding the smoothest route you can by looking ahead at where you want to go, away from obstacles. Ensure you've got plenty of time to react to obstacles too - quick changes in direction when riding a road bike off road can easily lead to falls. Balance your weight - especially when climbing, brake carefully and use your back brake more than the front, as skidding with the rear is less of an issue with the back end of your bike. Feathering your brakes is key. Wider tyres, beefier inner tubes and increased pressure in your tyres will all help avoid pinch punctures, though at the expense of some grip.
