Hypnosis, The Old-Fashioned Way

This happened many years ago. I was doing hypnotherapy at my office in Maryland and a man came in to stop smoking. It seems he had stopped smoking many years before, but had slipped back into the habit and wanted to "get back on the wagon." In my experience, fewer than five percent of my clients have been hypnotized before. For most, it is a new experience for them and they need to be counseled so they know what to expect. So this was an unusual experience for me to have a client who had been hypnotized before. Just for fun, I asked him if he remembered what sort of a hypnotic induction was used. I fully expected him to say "progressive muscle relaxation" since that is the most popular hypnotic induction around the world. Instead, he surprised me by saying, "The guy held up a pocket watch and told me to follow it with my eyes." I stifled a laugh, and explained to him that we no longer use that type of induction. It takes a long time and isn't as effective as faster inductions such as the Dave Elman induction.  The old pocket watch induction works by tiring the client's eyes to the point where they close. The hypnotist then deepens the trance with progressive relaxation. Nowadays we just ask the client to close his eyes!!
