"IF YOU ONLY KNEW" - a serious life poem in which the speaker expresses the origins of their sadness from Kyli Santiago's third book of poetry "Love, Life and Disappointment." Sometimes we keep our sadness to ourselves, locked deep inside because we don’t think anyone cares. Pain and sadness can scar the ones we love in ways that can be unknowing to us. “If You Only Knew” is an emotional poem that is a cry for help from a sad, depressed and lonely person that is suffering inside. It is important to pay attention to our loved ones to make sure they are not suffering silently. These actions showing we care can ultimately save the lives of the ones we love. With its unapologetic voice and - at times defiant language, “Love, Life and Disappointment” will empower you with its underlying theme of self-respect and self-preservation. You will also get a glimpse into the real-life relationship experiences of Kyli Santiago as she explores the ups and downs of her own personal connections with others - and how those bonds affect her relationship with herself. “Love, Life and Disappointment” truly is a breath of fresh air that says some of the things we’ve all wanted to say at one time or another - but were afraid to. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN POETRY AND MUSIC: As we all know, there has always been a historic connection between poetry and music. Through the ages, much poetry was performed to music. Music is definitely poetry. And vice-versa. When examined more critically, the art forms of music and poetry are almost synonymous: consider that a poem evokes, passion, love, hate, anger, loss, sorrow. Music, even without lyrics can bring across the same emotions. When you add lyrics or poetry to the music, a story emerges - which then enhances the meaning and emotion, making it a song. Poetry like music exists to allow for the expression of human emotions and very often, people can connect through music or poetry by understanding a shared feeling that is otherwise difficult to express. Another similarity that exists between music and poetry, is that songs themselves have to be rhythmic. The same is true about the flow of a poem. Rhythm is what makes music as well as poetry. Poetry is about flow, rhythm, meaning and expression. Instrumental music expresses, flows and shows just as much emotion as music does with words.
