Il Beccapesci

Europa occidentale, Mediterraneo, Mar Nero e Mar Caspio sono gli areali di presenza di questa specie, nidificante in Italia solo dal 1979. Oggi nidificante – ma anche migratrice e svernante – il Beccapesci si contraddistingue per le sue esigenze ecologiche, particolarmente legate agli ambienti costieri. Nidifica su isolotti sabbiosi, delta fluviali. Necessita di acqua pulita, ricca di pesci negli strati superficiali, sufficientemente bassa e con fondo sabbioso. Queste le condizioni ideali che permettono alla specie di cacciare con successo. Come dice il nome stesso, il Beccapesci è un abilissimo pescatore. Caccia lanciandosi in picchiata sull’acqua, ed è forse per questo che la presenza di acque chiare e pulite, pur su fondali sabbiosi, rappresenta una necessità per la specie, che mal tollera il disturbo da parte dell’uomo, specialmente in prossimità dei nidi. Gli stessi nidi vengono costruiti dal Beccapesci vicino all’acqua, in conche abilmente scavate sul terreno. Particolarmente contenuto il tasso riproduttivo, con non più di due uova deposte una sola volta l’anno, covate da entrambi i sessi. Solo da adulti i Beccapesci mostreranno quella caratteristica cresta di piume sul capo che rende questa specie inconfondibile. As the name suggests, the Sandwich Tern is a skilled fisherman. Hunting throwing swooping over the water, and it is perhaps for this reason that the presence of clear water and clean, even on sandy bottoms, is a necessity for the species, which badly tolerate the disturbance by humans, especially in the vicinity of the nests . The same nests are built by Beccapesci near water, skillfully carved in basins on the ground. Particularly low reproductive rate, with no more than two eggs laid only once a year, incubated by both sexes. Only from the Sandwich Tern adults show that characteristic crest of feathers on the head that makes this species unique.
