N. Kazarin, who lived for a long time in Siberia and Central Asia as a soldier, and then as a chronicler of local events. The album was intended as a gift to the future Emperor Nicholas II "the most august chieftain" and was presented to him in the summer of 1891, when he returned through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. Its main theme concerns Cossack folk history east of the Urals, beginning with the victory of Yermak over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with other events from three centuries of history.
