Johan Kvandal: "Legend" for Bassoon and String orchestra op.61. Written specially for Robert Rønnes solodebut concert in 1985. Robert Rønnes, Bassoon and Mac computer. This work is published by Norsk Musikkforlag. ------ Johan Kvandal (born September 8, 1919 , died February 16, 1999 ) [1] was a Norwegian composer . He was the son of composer David Monrad Johansen . He took his organist - and conducting training at the Conservatory of Music in Oslo . In addition, he studied composition and theory with Per Steenberg , Arild Sandvold and Geirr Tveitt . Composition studies he continued later with Joseph Marx in Vienna and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In Kvandal early works as "Five Small Piano Pieces," Op. 1 and "Seven Songs", Op. 4, the influence of the national movement in the 1920s-30's. He was also keen to combine Norwegian folk music and classical forms, "Sonatina for Piano" Op. 2 and "Norwegian Overture" Op. 7 shows clear signs. Stay in Paris (1952-1954) was a decisive impact on his work. Through his studies with Nadia Boulanger and rich musical environment, he became familiar with the works of composers such as Bartok , Stravinsky and Messiaen . This resulted in a far greater compositional freedom, which eventually evolved into a style he termed "modern tonality." Kvandal output includes compositions for virtually all types of ensembles, from solo instruments to large orchestra. Central is the opera "Mysteries" based on Hamsun's novel of the same name. Among his orchestral works are considered "Antagonia" Op. 38 (1973) for two string orchestras and percussion, the broad "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra", Op. 52 (1979), and "Michelangelo Poem" Op. 49 (1977), among the major works. His last great work, the Piano Concerto, Op. 85, was written for pianist Håvard Gimse , who recorded it on CD along with David Monrad Johansen's Piano Concerto in E flat major. Kvandal was active as a composer, organist and music critic.
