Finally, the long awaited winter cod bite took hold this past week, as a couple of good weather days produced a surge in cod action, especially on the East End. There was also some decent action reported from a couple of South Shore boats. The Viking Fleet saw very good catches the last three days they were able to sail - Wednesday, Saturday and again on Tuesday. The Captree based Laura Lee Fleet saw good action on offshore wrecks Wednesday and Saturday. Most herring reports continue to come from the western end of the Island, particularly Magnolia, Canarsie and Coney Island piers. The better white perch action appears concentrated in the tidal creeks between the Connetquot and Carmans rivers along the South Shore.
On the freshwater side, some of the Island’s lakes and ponds have been yielding catch and release action for pickerel and largemouth bass, while others are producing some holdover trout from last fall’s stocking. Belmont Lake State Park received an unexpected dose of stocked trout from the Connetquot hatchery last week which produced a nice flurry of action. Connetquot River State Park Preserve continues to produce some nice quality rainbows and a good number of brook trout.
If you are looking for some indoor sport this week, the New York Boat Show is in town through Sunday. It will be docked at the Javits Convention Center. On Saturday, the three most recent winners of the Dream Boat Challenge will be at the Steiger Craft display from 1 to 2 p.m. and at The Fisherman booth from 2:30 to 3:30. It will be a great opportunity to pick the brains of three of the region’s best anglers. The New York Coalition for Recreational Fishing Flea Market takes place on Saturday at the Hibernian Hall in Babylon from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with lots of good deals on tackle, some great raffle prizes and free seminars.
