Last weekend's Fraser Island trip- Perfect conditions on the water, but very hard fishing.
I had been trolling gar and hard bodied lures around for several hours and things were very very quiet with absolutely no sign of the target species of juvenile Black Marlin that come through every year.
I decided to throw the light rig with a metal jig out to at least catch something. After catching and releasing lots of some unidentified small reef fish that was in plague proportions, plus a heap of grinners of various sizes seemingly even more ravenous, I was getting more and more frustrated that there wasn't anything decent around.
Then not long after the tide change, suddenly things looked up! There was something busting up the bait close by. No time to re-rig, I just threw the same metal slow jig into the middle of the bust up, immediately pulling in a 35cm Bonito!
Well, not that much more exciting (Bonito is good "bait"), but a little bit of sport I figured. More bust ups started all round me, so I picked the busiest and threw the lure in again.
I hooked up again straight away, thinking it was another Bonito. I was wrong! This is what happened...
Jetfisher: Yamaha VX Limited fitted with Shoreline Yamaha "Tubbies" pods
Kit: lightweight Shimano Raider rod 7"6" with Quantum Smoke 5000. The Smoke is a very fast line retrieve reel (6.2:1) and perfect for fooling the smaller pelagic species, however I am dubious it will last long due to the saltwater drenching of "jet-fishing". Time will tell! I also broke the tip off on the rod on pretty much the first day I used it (high-sticking I guess), but seems to be fine now even that it is 6" shorter! :) Good casting and light to use all day rig, and does he trick with slow-pitch jigs too!
