Karnataka Lokayukta’s son sent to 9-day police custody

Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Y Bhaskar Rao’s son Ashwin Rao was today sent to nine-day police custody in connection with an extortion racket. Yesterday, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the in-house corruption at the Karnataka Lokayukta arrested Ashwin from his home in Secunderabad. Ashwin's alleged role in the racket emerged after Bengaluru Urban Zilla Panchayat executive engineer MN Krishnamurthy identified him as the one who demanded 1-crore bribe to save the engineer from future raids. Investigators have learned that Ashwin introduced himself as Krishna Rao before his victims while demanding huge sums of bribe. This was corroborated by Krishnamurthy, who later said that the Krishna Rao he met was indeed Ashwin. His name also figures in the first infor mation report filed by Lokayukta superintendent of police Sonia Narang, who blew the lid off the racket two months ago.
