The device I use to control is this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SYK18T0 (cheaper similar things available, but I liked this one)
This device is basically a keyboard, for controlling presentations (powerpoint etc), they usually send 'page up'/'page down'. This device can be configured (by holding down both arrow buttons for a few seconds) to cycle between pageup+pagedown, up+down, left+right.
It has volume up + volume down on the side, that I use to alter the brightness.
I previously accomplished (and uploaded a video of) something similar a few years ago before Kindle supported usb otg - sending commands via ssh from an android device, and optionally a bluetooth remote sending commands to the android. This new solution is much smoother!
Naturally this needs the kindle to be 'jailbroken', read the mobileread link above on how to do this.
