Do you know how to pronounce this word? It's quite a mouthful! Hydroureteronephrosis literally means water on the ureter and kidney. The primary cause of hydroureteronephrosis in children is an improper flow of urine down the urinary tract. This can be caused either by a back flow of urine up the ureter, or an obstruction in the lower urinary tract that prevents urine from passing out of the bladder. In either case, urine can back up into the ureter causing hydroureter, and eventually back up into the kidney causing hydronephrosis. When you put those two terms together, it's hydroureteronephrosis. Learn more about Kirk and his work at: http://www.nationwidechildrens.org/kirk-m-mchugh
