Check out this incredibly simple recipe for making your own toothpaste that uses just coconut oil, baking soda, peppermint oil and table salt. RECIPE: Warm your coconut oil and spoon out 6 tablespoons of liquid coconut oil and then 6 tablespoons of baking soda. Mix together with a full eyedropper of peppermint oil and 1/2 a teaspoon of table salt. Pour it into a glass jar, a tin, a Human Gear GoToob, http://amzn.to/1OBXV6T or even and existing toothpaste tube you have finished with and you're done! I have some left over toothpaste tubes that I've been using up the last of, but after a few days of using them, I really miss my home-made toothpaste and go back to it. It's gives a sharper and fresher clean feeling. Try pouring your mixture into a finished tube of toothpaste. ** I made this toothpaste in Summer and because of the warm weather, it remained quite soft. However when the weather cooled down, the coconut oil hardened and it can be more difficult (but not impossible) to get out of the tube (I just need to unscrew the lid). It becomes more of a putty-like consistency, which is totally fine, but worth making a note about to manage expectations! Recipe adjustments can include mixing some thinner oils like almond oil which don't solidify at room temperature or adding 2 tbsp of glycerin. You can also microwave for 10 - 20 seconds to soften. Other recipes make a jelly with gelatin or agar, but I prefer the simple recipe for ease (because I'm a mad lazy zero waster, yo). Please do experiment and google other recipes online too! ** Peppermint oil is wonderful stuff! I use it in an essential oil diffuser and add it to some hair products. Your oil bottle may also be able to be refilled at your local food coop. Rainbow Food Coop in San Francisco sells bulk essential oils so you can keep reusing the same bottle.
