Traditional dance-song; Bulgaria, Shopes region
The introduction of each new strophe of this dance-song picks up the final lines of the previous strophe. The musical form created by this dovetailing may be seen as an indirect precursor of the strophic song with refrain. The technique is first documented in 12th-century Benedicamus tropes from St Martial, but a similar device is also found in early Portuguese women's songs as well as in folksongs from other regions and periods.
The moon started shining,
Done, maiden,
you wild young thing.
On high and on wide
Done, maiden ...
And as it shines, it is laughing
Done, maiden ...
At lasses and at lads
Done, maiden ...
'cause they can't dance
Done, maiden ...
Until the sun goes down
Done, maiden ...
