Men arrested for killing of two Taiwanese students

Various of police at crime scene STORYLINE: Six men were being held in custody on Friday in connection with the murder of two Taiwanese nationals and the shooting of five others in the Dominican Republic, police said. Chen Ying Ho, 22, and Chen Huei Kao, 18, were killed on November 4 in Bonao, a mountain city about 57 miles (92 kilometres) north of Santo Domingo. Five other Taiwanese men were injured in the shooting attack - Chi Nien Wang, 17, Yee Pooi Sin, 70, Chong Look Siong, 72, Tan Ah Lik, 61, and Xian Nien Wang, whose age was not given. They were taken to hospital, and police did not have details on their condition on Friday. Officials said those detained were aged between 21 and 33, and were identified as Miguel Alfonso Moreta, Juan de la Cruz Henriquez, Julio de la Cruz Henr�quez, Alejandro Puello G�mez, Alejandro Corcino and Juan Tomas Guillen Reyes. Police said the men were arrested in the neighbourhood of Punta de Villa Mella, near the capital Santo Domingo. Investigators said the shooting might have been a retaliation for an October 20 traffic accident involving a Taiwanese student riding a motorcycle which left one person dead, the newspaper Listin Diario reported. The student involved in that incident was not among those injured and killed in this month's shootings. Police believe the assailants came to the students' home near the Falconbridge nickel mine with the intention of attacking them, and then fled in two jeeps. In Santo Domingo, National Police Chief Bernardo Santana Paez told the Taiwanese Ambassador to Dominican Republic Lin Chen and members of the media that the national police were "using all technical and scientific means to process the crime scene." Paez presented a digital camera, a mobile phone and other items that were stolen from the victims as well as handguns and hand cuffs that were allegedly found in the possession of the accused. The Taiwanese men were part of a team of crop-growers developing new strains of rice in the country. Taiwanese Ambassador Lin Chen thanked Dominican police for their "cooperation, compassion and sympathy" in dealing with the situation. Police said they are working with the Taiwanese embassy to investigate the case. The Dominican Republic is one of just 25 countries that maintains formal relations with Taiwan.
