I was recently discussing this mission from Medal of Honor (2010) with a friend. It struck me that it would make a good video. Since I lost my save-game when I reformatted my hard disk, it also was a good opportunity to replay the entire game with my new killer graphics setup.
Medal of Honor (2010), the latest installment in the Medal of Honor franchise, covers Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
In this mission, the player takes on the role of U.S. Army Captain Brad "Hawk" Hawkins, 1st Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment "Gunfighters." Hawk is the Copilot/Gunner in an AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter. The player never controls the helicopter at any point. The chopper follows a scripted path while the player fires the weapons systems at targets on the ground.
The 30MM cannon and Hydra rockets are point-and-shoot weapons. The cannon can be fired in a wide radius around the vehicle, but the rockets are front-fire only. The Longbows are also equipped with Hellfire missiles. The missiles are aspect lock only or "fire-and-forget."
There are two helicopters in this mission. Gunfighter 06 (male pilot) is Hawk's chopper and Gunfighter 11 (female pilot) is the other chopper. In the first half of the mission, both aircraft are fully functional. After Gunfighter 11 is damaged mid-mission and loses her weapons systems, she marks the targets and Hawk executes them.
Early in the mission, Hawk uses the Target Acquisition and Designation Sights (TADS) to launch Hellfire missiles at mortar positions after the pilots mark them.
I included the cut-scene at the end of the mission to exhibit the great cinematic transitions of this game. Throughout the game, the player plays as members of several different types of units who are all working separately toward the same goals. At times, the paths of these units intersect. At the end of a mission, the player's role will often switch from one unit, to the unit that just interacted with it. In the mission before this one, the player was SPC Dante Adams, whose Ranger unit is saved from an ambush and massive Taliban onslaught by the Gunfighters. After playing as the Gunfighters, the player then switches to "Deuce," the sniper in U.S. Army Special Operations team Wolfpack. I think that the interactions between the different units and the cinematic transitions add a lot to the gameplay.
