(16 Jan 2020) Muslim women marched with Indian flags and chanted freedom slogans in Kolkata on Thursday in a protest against India's new citizenship law.
The legislation and a proposed National Register of Citizens has sparked protests across the country since Parliament approved the measure on 11 December 2019.
The law allows Hindus, Christians, and other religious minorities who are in India illegally to become citizens if they can show they were persecuted because of their religion in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, but does not apply to Muslims.
