My Child Has a Flat Spot on His Head. Will He Need a Plagiocephaly Helmet?

http://facebook.com/jenncofit My son Jake has plagiocephaly and wears a helmet (also known as a band) on his head. We discovered that he had a flat spot and that he favored looking in one direction, so we asked out pediatrician about it and he referred us to a physical therapist. Jake was diagnosed with torticolis, which is basically a tightening of the neck muscles on one side. Since he was always facing one direction, he developed a flat spot there. This is very common in twins, preemies that go to the NICU, and especially in Baby A (of twins). Jake fits all three of these criteria, so it's no surprise that he not only has plagiocephaly, but the scan at the orthopedist showed that he had a differential of 17 on a scale from 1 to 20 (20 being the worst. His case was severe, so we opted to get him fitted for a StarBand (helmet). You slowly work your way up to 23 hours of helmet wear per day. For one hour of each day, you remove the helmet, wash the baby's hair and clean the helmet. To clean the helmet, use alcohol and a toothbrush or rag and scrub the inner lining. Dry with a towel and let sit until completely dry before placing it on his head. The helmet is extremely lightweight and doesn't bother the baby at all. He doesn't mind having it taken off or put on, and it hasn't affected anything else in his motor skills development.
