MYSTERIES in America's National Parks

The United States is home to 58 National Parks boasting 84-million acres of woods, wilderness, deserts and mountains and with so much space and millions of visitors every year, there are bound to be a few mysterious happenings. Disappearances, strange animals, unexplained events and other mysteries abound in these parks and today we’ll delve into a few that are hard to explain. Keith Reinhard used to work as a sports reporter for the Daily Herald in Chicago, and he decided to take a sabbatical back in 1988. He loved the mountains and wanted to live there as part of his bucket list. Along with this dream, he had also hoped to write a novel about Tom Young, a man who had disappeared from that exact town the previous year. Reinhard opened an antique store in a shop that used to be a bookstore that belonged to Tom Young. One day, Reinhard hiked Pendleton Mountain and never came home. 10,000 hours were spent searching for him and he was never found. His widow quoted the following to the Daily Herald, “Sometimes the answer is there is no answer.” 5 - Anything is Possible Considering the size of the Grand Canyon National Park, it’s no wonder that there are many myths and mysteries surrounding the vast area. The Hopi was a tribe that used to inhabit the canyon and there is speculation that the tribe built an underground citadel. They believed in a god called Maasaw, and he is said to live in a certain section of the canyon. People have reported seeing strange lights from this area and hearing a faint tapping sound on the rocks. Other have claimed to experience nausea and anxiety in this area and many accidents seem to occur there. Coincidence? What do you think? 4 - An Eternal Detour It was 1979 and he was only 8-years old at the time, but it was the last time the family of Douglass Legg would ever see him again. He and his family were hiking in the Adirondack Forest Preserve's Santanoni Preserve when his uncle saw poison ivy. He told Legg to run home and put long pants on. Their cabin was close-by, a straight line that Legg was very familiar with and off he ran. He never returned. The rescue mission for the 8-year old was one of the biggest and rescue missions in the Adirondacks', but despite this, he was never found. It was so sad because the family started suspecting each other, but many have put it down to the boy just wandering away and getting lost. 3 - Knocked Down What happened on the 27th of January in Olympic National Park is still a mystery, as an unknown force knocked down 100 trees! It’s easy to assume strong winds or something else weather-related did it, but data of weather patterns for this day showed nothing unusual. The day before this happened, park visitors reported hearing a weird rumbling sound, so it was assumed it was possibly a small earthquake – again – no evidence to confirm that. So, what was it? Some trees were completely knocked down, while others were broken or leaning awkwardly. Some like to believe that Big Foot truly does exist. 2 - Fill in the Gaps What happened to John Devine in 1997 still has a lot of gaps that need filling in. He was at Olympic National Park in northern Washington state, and it was his intention to hike from Mount Baldy into the park. Strangely, 4 hikers have disappeared from this area in the last 3 decades, and Devine is another to add to the list. He was 73-years old at the time, but despite his age, he was an experienced hiker. The trail was 24-miles or 39-kilometres and after leaving his camping mate to hunt, Devine went off on his day hike never to seen or heard from again. People searched for a week, and tragedy struck again when a rescue helicopter crashed and killed 3 people. Weather conditions were so bad that the search was called off. It’s said that the helicopter crash is also a mystery, as the pilot signalled that he would wait 5 minutes in the hope conditions would improve, and a mere moment later the helicopter departed and crashed. 1...
