It may be minuscule, but it dates back to 4,500-4,600 B.C. making it the oldest processed gold ever discovered. The ancient town that archaeologists found the bead in pre-dates Sumer (soomer) by one thousand years. Experts believe that settlers made the bead at this location, which a hostile tribe invaded and destroyed sometime around 4,100 B.C. Before this discovery, the oldest known processed gold was also discovered in Bulgaria in the city of Varna in 1972. 6 Matthew’s Tooth Hurricane Matthew was a very destructive category five hurricane that hit the southeastern United States from late September to early October. It also unearthed an extremely rare treasure that a couple stumbled upon while walking down North Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. Nat and Peggy Campbell found a massive shark tooth that is millions of years old. The tooth is approximately the size of a human hand and once belonged to a Megalodon (mega la don), a humongous prehistoric shark that could grow to be up to 60 feet long and is one of the biggest sharks known to exist on the planet. 5 Britain’s Pompeii A wealth of remarkable artifacts has been dug out of the ground in England’s Cambridgeshire Fens in the last year. The excavation has yielded a trove of artifacts unlike any seen in the area before. Experts have dubbed it Britain’s Pompeii because of how well preserved many of the artifacts are. Much like Pompeii this Bronze Age community was destroyed suddenly and violently by a fire three thousand years ago, entombing and preserving the settlement and giving experts an unprecedented and practically unobstructed view of the past. Archaeologist unearthed a perfectly preserved wheel along with thousands of pieces of burnt timber, eighty or so pieces of textile fragments and five roundhouses. Unlike Pompeii, there were no skeletons found, just a trophy skull that appeared to hang outside of one of the homes. Experts aren’t sure what caused the fire but hope that examination of the timber will lead to an answer. 4 The Ubaid Lizard When archaeologists were excavating the Tell Al Ubaid site in Iraq almost 100 years ago, they uncovered something truly strange: a humanoid figure with lizard-like characteristic. The 7,000 year old artifacts were small statuettes with human bodies with lizard-like faces as well as elongated legs. Either these artifacts are proof of some sort of actual lizard people roaming the earth thousands of years ago, or they are evidence of human abilities to exercise fantastic imagination and create made-up images that do not actually occur in real life at all. 3 Venus Figurines That is the collective name for a collection of prehistoric statuettes that were made during the Paleolithic period, all throughout Europe. More than 200 of these figurines have been uncovered dating back to 30,000 to 10,000 BC. There is a great load of mystery surrounding these figures. No one really knows why there were made or how they were so widespread. Some believe that they are fertility figures meant to honor the seemingly miraculous act of birth, explaining the exaggerated proportions. However, others believe that they are actually self portraits made by women who were looking down at their own bodies as reference. The forced perspective of staring down at yourself would explain the exaggerated figures as well. 2 The White City A team excavating a site in the middle of the jungles of Honduras unearthed a cache of shocking and incredibly rare stone sculptures from a mysterious ancient culture amongst the ruins of an old city. The city is one of a network of communities in Honduras that experts believe belong to a civilization of humans that thrived in the area long ago. Experts don't know much about this civilization, and the ancient city that the team was excavating appears to have been untouched since the people mysteriously abandoned it one thousand years ago. 1...
