Confidence vs narcissism can be hard to flush out. We live in the world of selfies and it can be confusing to try and define the line between self-confidence and narcissism. The line between healthy self-confident people who post many selfies vs a narcissistic person can become blurred and especially if you don't know where the dividing line is.
A YouTube Subscriber wrote in asking me "Am I a narcissist because I post a lot of selfies on social media?" Someone on her Facebook page accused her of being a narcissist and now she is worried she might be a narcissist.
Taking selfies on social media does not define you as a narcissist, although studies reveal that narcissism is on the rise based on research done amongst college students. People ask, "What is narcissism, and is our culture in danger of becoming a more narcissistic society?" Research seems to suggest that yes, our culture is more narcissistic than it was twenty years ago.
"Are selfies bad?" Selfies are not bad unless you rely on taking selfies on social media to feel better about yourself and because you need validation from the external world. Social media can become addictive and it is wise to check your own level on narcissism to ensure you do not get swept up in social media addiction.
Narcissists use social media to gain validation and to boast about themselves in an effort to minimize others while gaining attention. Narcissists will use social media, take selfies, and bolster themselves up in order to make themselves feel better. They use social media as a way to enhance their false self and to garner attention from others. A confident person uses social media as a way to express themselves. Confident people do not use social media to exploit or diminish the success of others.
In this video, we explore the difference between self-confidence and narcissism. I hope to help you define the line so you can make your own judgments and maybe even check your personal level of narcissism.
Many people quit social media and believe that social media ruined their life. When we keep ourselves accountable and use social media in a healthy way, we are able to remain true to ourselves and we also stay far away from dipping into the dark side of social media.
