The prime minister's gesture was met with loud applause by the BJP workers who had gathered to celebrate the party's successes in the Northeast. The BJP won the Tripura election and looks set to be part of the new Nagaland government. In Meghalaya, the BJP may have a chance at being in power if it manages to stitch together a post-poll alliance. PM Modi was expressing his joy over the BJPs performance when he paused for azaan. After the azaan was over, PM Modi continued his speech with a chant of Bharat Mata Ki Jai. This is not the first time, PM Modi has stopped a speech for azaan. In 2016, while campaigning in West Bengal and Gujarat, PM Modi had similarly paused his address when the sounds azaan echoed from a nearby mosque. A visibly elated BJP president Amit Shah had said that the electoral win was a victory of democracy over fear and intimidation. Shah said that the Left was not right for the country and BJPs victory has substantiated his claim.
