The two of them sat in the diner, neon lights above them illuminating the couple a bright blue. She was snug on his chest, smiling with her eyes closed. He had his arms spread over the top of the booth he was sitting at, listening to the band play. A small black boy played piano while another played drums, both utterly lost in the music. She spoke: "The music is good tonight" "It is." "Life is beautiful, sometimes" "I suppose it is." The piano player went into a gloomy solo. The man had a troubled look on his face. "This... This isn't right." He said. "Oh?" The woman said. Though she already knew what he was talking about, so she kept her eyes closed and head still on his chest. "No... No this isn't right at all. This is where you left me. This is where it all ended. You said goodbye to me for the last time here six years ago. We didn't listen to the music and I didn't get to take you home to show you the ring I had bought you. This is where it all went wrong." "You're right. But isn't it nice to pretend the happy times never went away at all?" He didn't dare move a muscle. "How long do I have here?" He said. "As long as you want. Until you leave." She nodded towards the diner exit. "And when I leave, I go back to my meaningless amble towards death?" She simply nodded, eyes still closed and smiling." He sighed, then put his arm on her shoulder. "Then let the band play on." And they did. And she sang. And he sat there forever. And he wasn't alone. For just a little while.
