These are also not the beautiful bodies we’d see in the context of a sexulaized fantasy. This is a book of beautiful bodies that is meant to elevate our experience of humanity. With images that are both nude and clothed, this book puts the naked bodies of both men and women ballet dancers on a pedestal as something we can celebrate, and simply enjoy without any trace of shame. The ballet dancers in this book have embraced lives of discipline, passion and creativity to unlock the incredible grace and esthetic potential of the human body. They train their bodies and their minds to perform at the very edge of human capacity. The dancers who populate these pages are some of the most dedicated athletes in the world. But dance is not a sport. They don’t train to score points. They train so they can express themselves through movement, with grace, precision and elegance. Just as great singers can bring a tear to our eyes with just the sound of their voice, these dancers can touch our hearts with nothing more than the movement of their bodies. Even as these amazing dancers can seem to shine above and beyond most of us – as somehow greater than the average person – they also reveal some surprising and vulnerable insights that show us just how much we all have in common. You might think that people who move through the world in such exquisitely formed bodies would be free of the insecurities and doubts that plague many of us about our appearance. But I’ve been blow away to realize that the pressures and insecurities in their world can be brutal, just like the pressures and insecurities in my world or yours. It’s this combination of imagery and personal voice that lends great depth to this special collection of images. When Randall Hobbet told us he had been photographing professional dancers we were excited, but we had no idea what we were about to see.
