Wide shot news conference STORYLINE Iran is producing the material needed to trigger a fission chain reaction that would detonate a nuclear bomb, alleged an Iranian opposition group on Thursday, adding that the "top secret project" proves Tehran does not intend to use its nuclear technology for peaceful purposes only. Speaking at a news conference in Paris, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) said that with an "initiator," or detonator, in place, Iran would have all the components for a nuclear weapon. The NCRI is the political wing of the Mujahedeen Khalq, which the United States considers a terror organisation. The group has periodically released information on Iran's nuclear programme, most of which cannot be independently confirmed. But it was instrumental in 2002 in revealing Iran's uranium enrichment programme. Iran claims its nuclear technology is for peaceful purposes such as generating power. But the United States and several other countries fear Iran is enriching uranium for nuclear weapons. Mohammed Mohaddessin, head of the group's foreign affairs committee, told a news conference in Paris that Tehran is working to produce a nuclear weapon by the end of 2005. The problem for Tehran was obtaining enough enriched uranium, rather than mastering the technology, he said. Mohaddessin would not name sources for the information, saying only that it was obtained from "the Iranian people" and the group's network inside Iran.
