Today I'm going to share with you how someone gets pandas syndrome, the symptoms involved and ideas involving treatment. Sometimes after I lock the door to my house or my car and walk away I feel anxiety that I didn't lock the door. The next thing I do is go back and double check to make sure the door is locked. If you had to guess what type of disorder this was, what would it be? Yes, it is obsessive compulsive disorder.
Pandas syndrome is a rare disease that affects children where they usually get obsessive compulsive disease or OCD in short. It is diagnosed in children right after getting strep throat. Strep throat is when the throat becomes sore and inflamed after a bacterial infection. With every infection the body creates antibodies to help eliminate bacteria from the body. With pandas syndrome some people believe that these antibodies mistakenly attack the brain, heart and other body parts. This then creates the symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder.
Children with OCD can worry too much and have strong urges to do things compulsively. Someone could have anxiety over if a door is locked, separation anxiety, it could be about germs (howard hughes) or a strong need for order. Another sign of this illness would be unusual personality changes, such as sudden fits of anger, rage or sadness. A child could have nervous system problems, such as jerky movements or problems with walking.
There could be changes to a child's eating routine. A child could have fear of choking, they may lose a lot of weight or even have an increase to their appetite. Next up a child could have changes to urination, sensitivity to light, noises or changes to a child's critical thinking skills.
The important thing is that if you feel your child could have pandas syndrome or are worried about your child you probably should take him to see specialist because it will at least give you piece of mind. Treatment for this disorder usually involves cognitive behavioral therapy and or prescription medication. We all want health problems to go away as soon as possible, but unfortunately with pandas syndrome it can take a while.
To sum everything up pandas is a rare disease that impacts a child after strep throat. The main symptoms include obsessive compulsive disorder, personality changes, nervous system problems such as jerky movements, changes to a child eating routine, sensitivity to light, frequent urination and changes to critical thinking skills. Treatment usually involves prescription medication and cognitive behavioral therapy.
