Peraia Thessaloniki , Περαία Θεσσαλονίκη

Peraia (Greek: Περαία) is a suburb of Thessaloniki, located southeast of the city centre, along the coast of the Thermaic Gulf. Greek National Road 16 is located to the east and formerly passed through Peraia. Peraia is part of the municipality Thermaikos. Peraia began its history in 1923 when refugees from Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace arrived during the Asia Minor Catastrophe. 37,387 refugees l ived in 75 refugee camps throughout the Thessaloniki area. From these, 1,745 left for the southeastern shores of the Thermaic Gulf and created three settlemetns, Agia Triada, Neoi Epivates and Peraia. West of Peraia is Neoi Epivates, also known as Baxe Tsifliki. 159 refugee families (631 persons), all originating from the coastal town Epivates in Propontis, settled here and named their new home Neoi (New) Epivates. Further west along the beach lies Agia Triada. 40 refugee families from Xastero and 45 from Oikonomeio settled here. Today Peraia, together with the other suburbs of Thermaikos, forms one of the most rapidly developing suburbs of Thessaloniki, with many people choosing to move there; but infrastructure is hardly keeping pace, with many roads remaining un-opened or inadequate for today's needs.
