Here's a little pixel art tip video talking a bit on paying attention to detail, and not putting more detail into a piece than can effectively fit. Sometimes you see pieces that are really busy, and that try to portray more detail than is really necessary. Really, effective pieces portray ideas, not "realities", which can easily fail.
The brain can fill in gaps left by the artist, and effective pixel art can use this.
The idea of water, the idea of an oak tree, the idea of something that appears smooth, the idea of motion - portraying ideas with the minimum amount of pixels necessary is what pixel art is all about.
