In this episode, you will learn 3 things
1. the power of the word DO
2. how to FRONT your ideas
3. how to use the REPETITION of 3
1. THE POWER OF 'DO'
When answering a question, we often repeat the question word with stress or emphasis, but often without saying yes or no. For example,
Do you like hamburgers? I do like hamburgers
Is it an interesting place? It is an interesting place
2. 'FRONTING' A MAIN IDEA
We often ‘front’ our main idea - to show it is important. For example,
Q: What skills do you need to be a good writer?
Common Answer: You need to be good at spelling
BUT, when fronting, you put the most important thing (here the skill) first. So, you might say
A: Being good at spelling is important
A: Being good at spelling would be one.
3. REPETITION OF THREE
In spoken English, we often repeat a phrase three times.
Q: What fruit do you like?
A: I like apples, I like bananas, and I like grapes
Q:What do you use a dictionary for?
A: You can find the meanings of a words, you can find conjugations of verbs, you can find whether a word is a verb or an adverb…
MORE INTERESTING LANGUAGE FROM THE TEST
What shall I call you? ‘Adlay’ is fine
It is a good place
Like I said…
There is a …which is popular…
I do often use a dictionary
I ….on a regular basis
I find …to be extremely good (‘I find’ is used a commonly instead of ‘I think, in my experience’)
I would have probably said a cat is my favourite animal.
I used to play the guitar. It’s a hobby of mine.
It was a good 4 or 5 years ago when I last…. (‘good’ here means ‘at least’)
The content is short-lasting
The same magazine hanging around for a month (hanging around meaning ‘existing’ or ‘being in publication’)
I would have said newspapers are more current (‘I would have said’ here means ‘I think’….)
To be fluent in the language would be one. (fronting)
Having an open mind.(fronting)
Inquisitive - Meaning ‘asking lots of questions’
I think more online content is something that has changed. (fronting)
It’s far easier ….(instead of ‘its much easier’)
The places where you can get you news is broader
It’s changed in terms of where you find your news and also the spectrum of outlets is wider.
