Preparing to Cross Water with Jon Ensign

Teaching a horse to cross water can be challenging. Set yourself up for success by following Jon Ensign's tips on how to cross water safely and confidently on your horse. Most horses do not want to cross because they are afraid. A river or creek with a mud bottom is particularly troubling to a horse, as they can feel trapped or stuck. Allow the horse to explore the bank and to pick his own path. The last thing you'd like to do is whip and spur at the edge of the water. Punishing them will only increase the fear. Take them away from the water and put them to work, and then bring them to the bank to rest.
