http://www.builtlean.com - The afterburn effect is calorie burn AFTER exercise. Learn why it's important, how to maximize it, and why it's been so difficult to measure.
Transcripts:
MARK: Hi, I'm Mark the creator of BuiltLean,
if you're watching for the first time,
and a very popular question I get is,
what is the afterburn effect,
and how do I maximize it.
So the simple definition of what
is the afterburn effect,
is simply calorie burn after exercise.
and this has been getting a lot more popularity,
this idea of the afterburn effect
cuz' recent research has shown that higher
intensity exercise,
can lead to a large afterburn effect and
help you get leaner, and stronger and fitter
much faster, than let's just say,
going for a light jog, or going for a walk.
And so, you might be thinking: okay, why
is this becoming popular now?
Why are we learning about this now.
Well, for literally decades, exercise
physiologist used to measure calorie burn
just during exercise. And
it's very easy
because you measure the amount of oxygen consumed,
so if you go for a light jog,
we know how many calories you're burning.
It's very easy to determine.
However, what happens when you go for
an intense sprint
or you lift weights really intensely?
We kinda have an idea of how many calories
you're burning during the workout,
but we really have no idea how many calories
you're burning after the workout.
Recent research is exploring this idea and
we're starting to realize you actually burn alot of calories
in fact, as 95% of your calorie burn
can come after exercise.
To put that in perspective, you may go for a sprint
or some sprints and burn let's just say 10 calories
you might burn next to a hundred
in the next day
because there's a metabolic disturbance to
your body, and your body is kind of
working to getting it back to normal, and
back to homeostasis.
And so, how do you optimize the afterburn effect?
is really the most important question.
Well, in a phrase, it's short bursts of
intense activity.
That's really the way to maximize the afterburn
effect,
that types of workouts we do at BuiltLean.
And one more thing, if you want a lot
more detail than in this video,
go to BuiltLean.com, put afterburn into
the search bar,
and you'll come across an article where I have
a 45-minute interview
with literally the foremost expert on
the afterburn effect.
Dr. Christopher Scott, he's a Phd. he studies
the afterburn effect literally for a living,
You can listen to this interview,
I also have a summary on the website,
so, I hope this is a helpful video, if
you want more detail go to the website
and, I think that's it, thanks for watching.
