I found this decorating style on the Betty Crocker website. The vanilla cupcakes recipe can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-i8s04d9ts I got this question on my last tie dye rainbow cupcake recipe way too many times: "Do I have to use the Wilton dyes? Can I just use the liquid stuff?" The answer to that is up to you. You are the boss of you. However, if you do use those little liquidy dyes, your color payoff is not going to be as bright, vivid, in your face as these Wilton icing dyes are. They are a little pricey here in Hawaii but I am sure they are much cheaper on the mainland. Spend a couple of bucks and get some! Anyway!! Here are your step by step instructions on how to make these tie dye (rainbow like) cupcakes. Take whatever white cake recipe you are using for your cupcakes and divide it into three bowls evenly. (The vanilla cupcake recipe is perfect for this). Keep one white, dye the others red and blue. You will be putting six total teaspoonfuls into each cupcake. Use white cupcake liners so people can see the beautiful red, white and blue colors of the cupcake. The name of the game to these tie dye/rainbow cupcakes is PATIENCE. You can slop it in, but the different colors will climb up the sides of your cupcake and not make the red, white and blue print on the cupcake liner as cool looking. Start with red, cover the bottom with the two teaspoonfuls and make sure it is completely covered. My method with the runny cake mix was to drizzle it in while moving in a circle. When done, I would use the back of the teaspoon to smooth it all down. This was a thicker mix so you will see the method I worked with. Follow with the white, then the blue. Bake according to the instructions given with your cake mix. These are FUN, but they are time consuming, as was the tie dye / rainbow cupcakes that I made before. I start with the red, then the white, then the blue for the cupcake liner colors. If you want to do it in the reverse way because they'd show red/white/blue top to bottom, that's your prerogative. When you remove the liner and look at it when done "my" way, you get the red/white/blue effect.
