The Vatican Apostolic Library is the library that the Holy See established and has curated in the Vatican since the fifteenth century, and it has one of the largest and most important collections of ancient texts and rare manuscripts in the world, which are part of the world heritage. The Vatican Apostolic Library made a fundamental contribution to history with its plan to digitise its manuscripts, meeting the technological challenge of providing a brilliant, state-of-the-art IT infrastructure. The Vatican Library preservation and digitisation project was started about 4 years ago with a beta test phase during which a series of technological solutions were identified that might be able to meet our institutional needs in some way for a time span of at least 50 years. Efficiency was a critical theme, and energy savings has now become a primary factor in selecting information systems. We started directly by constructing the data centre, and to do this we used a variety of consulting firms. We then analysed the results and were most persuaded by the Rittal solution.
