Renegade Racing is a game, not about renegades, and it's not even completely about racing either. It's more about stunt driving, high-flying aerial combos, and utterly over the top race tracks. You can drive anything from ice cream trucks, to buses, to police patrol cars, and of course, the monster truck.
The commands are all simple enough, you press up to accelerate, and down to brake. As the game is a sidescroller, you don't have to worry about turning left or right. Instead, the left and right keys allow you to perform back and front wheelies respectively. For those who don't know, a wheelie is when you drive a vehicle on just the front or the back wheels, something more typically seen with bicycles and motorcycles, but hey, this is a game so anything goes.
There are various levels that you can progress through. A snow level, typical lush grasslands, and even an underground volcanic wasteland full of magma-y doom and death. That last one isn't quite so fun though... But still, all in all, it's a pretty great game. Each level requires you to pass certain challenges, like finishing third or better, knocking over all the snowmen (for reals) in a level, collecting all the coins, or even stopping at red lights while your competitors go streaking by.
As the game challenges you with different challenges each level, finish first is less of an issue than performing stunts. There is ample opportunity on each level to get some serious air time. While in the air, you can press left or right to tilt your vehicle in that direction allowing you to do flips. Managing a back flip? Easy. A front flip? Also easy. A double, triple, quadruple, or even quintuple back flip? Piece of cake. What can be more challenging though are the combos.
In order to get a combo, you have to perform multiple stunts while in the air, like a back flip followed by a double front flip. Getting these combos is where the big money lies. Each level you are given a cash (in-game) reward based on your performance. Finishing first will obviously get you the most money, but performing amazing stunts one after the other can easily net you just as much. What is this money used for then, pray tell? Why, what else than to customize your ride!
You can buy new vehicles as they are unlocked by completing challenges. Once unlocked, you can purchase the different vehicles depending on what you prefer. Speed? Get something sleek and shiny. Rugged? Go for the monster truck. Ridiculous? Try the ice cream truck or the double decker bus. There's a vehicle for all tastes. What's even better is that you can use the money you've earned to customize each even further with a paint job, better acceleration, faster top speed, stronger torque, etc...
All in all, it's a fun game that probably won't hold your attention for longer than a day. But still, while it lasts, it's great fun watching cars flip through the air in physics-defying acrobatics of mechanized mayhem. If you haven't checked it out by now, go for it!
