This thing had a couple of problems, and I also wanted to improve the operation slightly to suit my tastes.
First, I replace the bad speaker. The speakers in these are known to fail after a while, so I put a new one in there. Then I remove the noise blanking while tuning, and also remove the detent in the tuning knob. Now it tunes much like an analog receiver with no chuffing and a smooth action on the dial.
Finally, I replace the green display LED's with amber ones. This didn't wind up being as bright as I had hoped, so maybe I'll go back to that in the future.
In all, though, I'm happy with the end result. The radio is much more usable now.
