STORYLINE:
A volcano near Quito erupted on Thursday spewing a column of ash and poisonous gas four miles (seven kilometres) into the sky.
Reventador, a 3,562 metre (11,775-foot) volcano located 95 kilometres (60 miles) northeast of Quito, began erupting on Sunday, cloaking the capital and nearby regions with up to 2 inches (5 centimetres) of white ash.
Hugo Yepez, director of Ecuador's Geophysical Institute, described Thursday's 0630 am (1130GMT) eruption as small, but said it produced a high enough column that wind could carry the ash to Quito.
Ecuador's Civil Defence urged the capital's 1.4 (m) million residents to stay inside if ash falls again on the capital. It has advised the public to protect themselves against eye irritation and ash inhalation if they go outside.
Sunday's eruption, which sent gases and ash nine miles (15 kilometers) high, forced the closure of the Quito's international airport and led President Gustavo Noboa to declare a state of emergency on Monday in four provinces affected by the volcanic eruption and falling ash.
The state of emergency remained in effect on Thursday. Officials hope to reopen the airport by Monday, although further eruptions may
delay their plans.
While the eruptions have not killed anyone, one person died and 16 others were injured in separate accidents involving people who fell while sweeping ash from rooftops, officials said.
