Richard Oschanitzky (1939-1979): Double concerto (1969)

Dublu concert pentru pian, saxofon tenor, orchestră simfonică şi big band (1969) Double concerto for piano, tenor saxophone, symphony orchestra and big band (1969) Pianist, composer, arranger and conductor Richard Oschanitzky was one of Romania's foremost jazz musicians. Since his wife was German, he often visited the German Democratic Republic. In the autumn of 1969, he recorded this masterpiece of symphonic jazz with tenor saxophonist Dan Mândrilă, Günter Gollasch's big band and the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Adolf Fritz Guhl, in what a Romanian CD booklet calls Leipzig Cathedral ("într-o catedrală din Leipzig") – since there never has been any such thing as a Leipzig Cathedral, it was likely the Bethanienkirche, the orchestra's major recording studio. That recording was first released on Electrecord LP ST-EDE 04214 ("Jazz Restitutio 2") in 1993.* The Romanian premiere of the concerto, which was arguably also its first live performance, took place in Iaşi on November 26, 2004. Its soloists, Florian Weber and Nicolas Simion, also gave the piece its Bucharest premiere two weeks later, on December 10, in the Studioul de concerte "Mihail Jora" (aka Sala Radio).
