http://www.crmjewelers.com – Rolex Enforcer in Miami – Part I – Fake Watches and More
After our last YouTube video interview of the Rolex Enforcer over Skype, I was accused of being his alter ego. People, really?!?
This time, we did it a little differently...we had him personally come in to our store in Downtown Miami and do a sit-down to discuss the fake watch market and a lot of other juicy horological topics.
This is Part 1 of the interview, where we discuss fake watches in general.
During the beginning of his interview, the Enforcer mentioned that, since the first days when he started busting celebrities a la raw, things have toned down a bit. Celebrities are now a bit more careful when they post their luxury watches on Instagram. They now know that the Enforcer is watching!
The Enforcer also discussed the busting of Young Thug with a fake AP Schumacher and the involvement of Fake Watchbuster in the bust.
The interviewed then got into whether or not counterfeit watches had been getting better; i.e., more difficult to spot. Both of us agreed that they had. I mentioned that a really good fake model was the AP Diver. The Enforcer discussed and compared the Royal Oak Offshore rubber-clad models and his personal AP Navy.
I then brought up the fact that due to the consistency in the Rolex manufacturing process, fake models of their timepieces are a lot easier for me to spot.
The Rolex Enforcer discussed the issue with fake Hublots. Although the higher quality of newer Hublots and the company's shift to in-house movements make them more difficult to counterfeit, older Big Bangs and other Hublot models that did not adhere to the same levels of quality control are easier to fake.
A brand that the Enforcer admitted to shy away from is Panerai due to the simplicity of their watches and, therefore, the ease of counterfeiting them. I agreed with him. Fake Panerais are very tricky to inspect and require analyzing many different features at time, going deeper and deeper each time.
The Enforcer also brought up vintage GMTs and why counterfeiters gravitate towards them when trying to manufacture fake Rolex watches.
I also added the problem with vintage Daytonas. Even though they're very difficult to fake, many of the older models contain after-market parts that significantly decrease the value of the watch when you're going to buy it – so as a buyer, you need to be careful.
During the last part of the interview, a very common topic was discussed: adding after-market parts to genuine luxury watches.
I brought up an example I'm all too familiar with: when customers have asked us to add an after-market dial to a stainless steel Daytona, which makes it very similar in look to the much more expensive platinum model. When asked if he felt that adding after-market dials and bezels to Rolex watches made them counterfeit or was degrading in any way, the Rolex Enforcer said that he didn't think there was anything wrong with it.
So there you go purists! Coming straight from the horse's mouth!
What did you think of the Rolex Enforcer in Miami Part I?
