Whether you regard the selfie – a self-portrait taken on a smartphone, which is uploaded on social media – as just some harmless fun or the last word in narcissistic self absorption, it has clearly captured the spirit of the age.
It has been embraced with equal fervour by teenagers and office workers as it has by celebrities and politicians.
At the Oscars in 2014, Ellen DeGeneres managed to capture a host of Hollywood stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie in a single snap. It went on to be shared more than 2 million times.
But as student Louisa Foley found, when she photographed herself in front of Eastbourne Pier, you don't need to be famous – or even human – for your image to go viral.
