Alex Hopkins first started writing this musical in 2008. She had only written a couple of the songs when in 2010, she heard about Tyler's story. She continued to hear about these events in which teens were taking their own lives due to cyber/technological bullying. She then realized how much technology had come to affect today's society. Not only can we contact any one of our friends within a matter of seconds or find a route to a destination miles away, but we can also hide behind a cell phone, computer, or an entire social networking system to harm others in ways that were never possible before. In the case of Tyler, this is exactly what happened. Alex's musical is not Tyler's exact story, but it is based upon it, portraying a group of high school kids who are extremely dependent on technology. This is a comedy AND a drama. Just as some use technology for light, comedic amusement, this musical shows that this entertainment can turn to something much darker within a matter of seconds. Jared Norman, an experienced director, suggested the musical be turned into a film. Alex and Jared then teamed up to spread the word about technological dependence and Tyler Clementi's story, as well as the effects on our entire society. We want this film to be produced because we want a relatable way to portray our society's strong dependence on technology. The script is comedic, but because it is relatable, we hope the audience will start to realize how these characters are actually just like them. The message we want our viewers to walk away with is, "What if this happened to me?" We want the audience to understand that as technology improves and becomes almost a partner to us, we may just be the ones with the short end of the stick.
