Raga Puriya ( 74.00 ) Alap, Jor & Jhala ( 58.53 ) Dhrupad in Chautal ( 15.44 ) Shamsuddin Faridi Desai - Rudra Veena S.B. Pathak - Pakhawaj Pentatonic Raga of the deep night 1. Shamsuddin Faridi is not really (just) a musician. He is known as "Sufi Baba" among his associates. He spends most of his time at the Dargas (mausolem) of the medieval Sufi saints Shaik Kalimuddin and Baba Qutub ud din Bhaktiar Kaki in Delhi. He has led the life of an ascetic, haunting graveyards and cremation grounds. At least on one occasion he was even mistaken for a ghoul/djinn/spirit ;-) 2. This Puriya is not just music. The musician has no intention to entertain you or to show his technical prowess (although some parts of this, especially the jhala, transcends most of the standards set by other Hindustani musicians). This is a Nada Yoga (the Yoga of sounds) session which has been recorded by chance and you are invited to participate. 3. Do not look for phrases in this music. Pay attention to sounds. This is a collection of silence and sounds, designed to make you go beyond manifested reality. 4. The Raga Puriya of course is adhered to strictly making this performance a strong mixture of the unusual with the familiar. 5. The musician plays the instrument in a Yogic posture (Virasana) with bare fingernails. No pillows are used to lessen discomfort ! 6. This is Kirana - Gauharbani dhrupad probably closest to the Bande Ali Khan idiom available today. ( Review taken from the Internet )
