For well over ten years, Holly Maniatty has been using her skills as an interpreter to bring music to the deaf. In 2009, she worked for her first hip-hop show, interpreting for the Beastie Boys at Bonaroo. To prepare for shows, Maniatty will spend up to 100 hours studying the musician by listening and memorizing their lyrics and watching their old performances. Most recently, Maniatty worked as a sign language interpreter at the New Orleans Jazz Fest. A video of Maniatty signing and dancing along to Snoop Dogg’s “P.I.M.P.” was shared on Facebook and has since gone viral. By using her whole body to interpret the music, Maniatty has created an authentic concert experience for deaf concert-goers.
