India Matters NDTV Till two years ago, the Kabir Kala Manch, a Pune-based group of cultural activists would sing for Dalit audiences all over Maharashtra. Their songs of protest and change reflected the reality of their community. The groups popularity soared in 2006 after four members of the Bhaiyalal Bhotmange family were hacked to death over a land dispute in the village of Khairlanji, 100 kilometres from Nagpur. His wife and young daughter were publicly gang raped before being lynched. Both politicians and the national media ignored the atrocity, till Dalit anger exploded on the streets of Mumbai and made middle class India nervous. And for year after year, on stage after stage the Kabir Kala Manch reminded audiences of the terrible crime.
