Sparing civilians in war

ANU Chancellor, Professor Gareth Evans AC QC, and Dr Seth Lazar, Senior Research Fellow, ANU School of Philosophy, discuss Dr Lazar’s new book ‘Sparing Civilians’. Dr Lazar defends the distinction between civilians and soldiers in war against recent political and philosophical challenges. He introduces and defends the principle that killing civilians is worse than killing soldiers, and considers the implications of this principle for current conflicts, such as the ongoing intervention in Iraq and Syria against ISIS.
