Splatoon's 2.0.0 update is out! That means not only a bunch of small changes to the way the game is played, but a lot of clothing, some new features (such as trading SplatNet clothing back and the ability to change weapons and clothing within a room), but more content too. Over this weekend, we got the Hydra Splatling (I'll get to that later) as a new weapon, Salmon Smokeyard as a new Salmon Run stage, MakoMart as a new standard stage, 2 new bands (Irish Rock band Bottom Feeders and New Age Jazz band Ink Theory), 4 new hairdos, and Clam Blitz as a new Ranked mode. For now, here is MakoMart, a supermarket. It's a pretty wide open stage without large differences in elevation, and, as this is an ink battles area, the topography makes no sense for its intended purpose. The weapon I'm using in this video is the Splash-o-matic. In the first game, it was unlocked before the Sploosh-o-matic and was regarded as the easier one to use; in Splatoon 2, it comes second and is a lot less common. Whereas the Sploosh-o-matic has very short range and a scattered, almost spray-like drop pattern to inking, the Splash-o-matic is medium-long range and highly focused. Interestingly, both of them are not too shabby at inking due to their high fire rates, but because of their contrasting dispersal, the Splash-o-matic excels with head-on fighting as long as your aim isn't too shaky, whereas the Sploosh-o-matic is more about sneaking around and flanking opponents. Hence, you'd use the Sploosh in wide open areas where you have room to move around, whereas this Splash is more about cramped spaces where your opponents' options are limited. The Splash-o-matic comes with the Toxic Flask and the Inkjet. As the Splash-o-matic demands precise aim, throwing Toxic Flasks will slow opponents caught within them and expose their locations enough for you to easily splat them. Your playstyle may vary form mine, but I use the Toxic Flasks a lot to assist my shoddy aim and to help my teammates catch people. The Inkjet is an overall useful specials, though it's seen better days and I'm not very good with this special compared to the others. I don't really see how it meshes with the rest of what the Splash-o-matic does, except that you can throw Toxic Flasks right before starting the Inkjet to make it harder for them to escape. The Splash-o-matic is a pretty standard Automatic weapon, and thus it doesn't have any glaring advantages or disadvantages in any of the Ranked modes. However, the Toxic Flasks are quite useful in Rainmaker and Tower Control provided you can figure out where your opponents will go. In certain circumstances, you can force them to travel through the gas cloud. Your teammates will appreciate this. Toxic Flasks can also give opponents a hard time in Splat Zones, but it'll depend on what weapons the opponents have: If they can fill in a Splat Zone from without, it won't help you much, and you'll have to reply on the Splash-o-matic's ability to rapidly ink. Match #1 MakoMart Turf War Splash-o-matic Color Scheme: Desert Wildflowers Song: "Fins & Fiddles" by Bottom Feeders Some of you might have noticed I rarely ever venture into the opponents' half of the stage whenever I'm in Turf Wars. What you'll see transpiring toward the end of this match is why: I'm there to try to stop any opponents from slipping through, because once even one of them gets through, the opponents can proceed to devastate us by going around my teammates too preoccupied with whatever is in front of them to check the map. I made that mistake going after the Clash Blaster user and paid for it. (You may notice our Hydra Splatling user only inked 88p, but someone from the other side got disconnected, so it kind of evenedout.) That, and it's a new stage and people might not know how to navigate it yet. Match #2 Blackbelly Skatepark Tower Control Splash-o-matic Color Scheme: Joker 2 Song: "Broken Coral" by Ink Theory Since I didn't really cover much Blackbelly Skatepark, I'll be covering the Ranked modes for both this and MakoMart at about the same time. You'll see just how useful Toxic Flasks are for Tower Control. Match #3 Blackbelly Skatepark Rainmaker Splash-o-matic Color Scheme: Minions Song: "Seafoam Shanty" by Bottom Feeders Rainmaker was one of the rare modes for Blackbelly Skatepark in the first game due to the short distance between the Rainmaker and the goal. They added in a lot of walls here to remedy that, it seems. Match #4 MakoMart Tower Control Splash-o-matic Color Scheme: Minions Song: "Seafoam Shanty" by Bottom Feeders There'll be more MakoMart Ranked later, but here's Tower Control for now. Whatever dysfunction you saw in Turf Wars would be multiplied for Ranked due to the greater degree of cooperation required.
